With a successful year of new Apple products in 2020, one set of products we didn’t see was the new AirPods.

While the AirPods range of headphones are very popular and have been out now for some years, the audio quality has not been the best. The arrival of the AirPods Pro this, with a better design, better noise isolation, and better audio. You could argue that they are better in every way, and critics agree.

At the moment, the AirPods Pro set a benchmark, and many believe Apple will be perfecting this with the AirPods Pro 2.

The current AirPods Pro’s sell for $249 and according to analysts, they have sold very well with Apple expecting to shift 90 million AirPods across the entire line this year. It seems likely that Apple believes they’ve hit its sweet spots, but in reality, it put the AirPods in rude health. That also means there’s no need for Apple to reduce the price anytime soon. $249 sounds bang on the money for what the AirPods Pro 2 will cost.

According to credible analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the second-generation Apple Airpods Pro will go into production in the latter half of 2021 with a proposed release date of 2022. But before you get upset by that release date being in 2022, another reliable leaker Jon Prosser said a new AirPod model is on the way, and they will be released very soon. However, I assume he’s referring to the AirPods 3 that are most likely coming out in March 2021.

For design, the standard AirPods have a poor design, they were based on the cable earphones you get in the iPhone box. However, the last AirPods Pro’s were much improved, being more comfortable to wear, and the sound being much crisper as well.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the AirPods Pro 2 will look the same, with the internal set to be updated. I’m still hopeful that Apple can make some improvements to this design though. One main complaint from myself and many others is the fiddly nature of the stem of the pods which is not the most responsive, so improvements would be welcome on this.

Apple’s reluctance to offer anything other than the glossy white means they get quite dirty and grubby really easily. We are hopeful for some new colors to come along.

The first generation of AirPods Pro had active noise cancellation, transparency mode, IPX4 resistance, and QI wireless charging. Still, at 4.4 hours with active noise cancellation on, battery life is not the best. A battery life of 7 or 8 hours would be more in tune with wireless earphones we are heading towards nowadays.

As for the AirPods 3 coming out in March, Ming-Chi Kuo says can expect a design refresh with Apple taking some ideas from the current AirPods Pro. Kuo also says the AirPods 3 will adopt a compact system, which is a method that allows product makers to create smaller devices, and Apple is supposedly utilizing this for this model of AirPods.
