Hunger Games fans: Prepare to see the dystopian world of Panem come to life on the big screen again. We learned of the forthcoming Hunger Games prequel book, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, back in June. Since then we’ve been crossing our fingers for movie adaptation news. It must have worked because the film is officially slated to hit the big screen. We have our bows and arrows ready—but will we need them?
On April 21st, Lionsgate revealed that it optioned the rights to the long-anticipated Hunger Games prequel. The studio was home to the original films in the Hunger Games trilogy: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay.
Collins will co-write and co-executive produce The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
The long-awaited book will be released on May 19th. Although we might have seen the last of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the prequel will give readers a close look at another major player in the Hunger Games universe: President Snow. The prequel begins 64 years before the events of The Hunger Games and follows an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, long before he sets his sights on becoming the dictator of Panem.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, “Young Coriolanus is handsome and charming, and though the Snow family has fallen on hard times, he sees a chance for a change in his fortunes when he is chosen to be a mentor for the 10th Hunger Games…only to have his elation dashed when he is assigned to mentor the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.”
So, it sounds like Snow’s relationship with District 12 was layered long before Katniss Everdeen stepped into the picture. Fans have had mixed feelings about Snow taking center stage in this series, as he plays the role of the enemy throughout the entire Hunger Games trilogy. However, some fans are eager to see what led to Snow’s eventual dictatorship.
We’ll have to wait until May 19th to see how it all shakes out.
